A new study published in the peer-reviewed journal, Advances in Mind-Body Medicine, reveals the stunning results of patients taking Brain Power Basics.¹ The Brain Directed Nutrients (BDNs) in Brain Power Basics are a combination of vitamins, minerals and herbs that have been found to benefit brain health when used in conjunction with each other. What that means is that their sum is greater than their parts and patients are seeing dramatic, positive changes because of it. “We are very excited about these results, as it shows a comprehensive daily supplement system can clearly help support brain function and overall brain health,” said Dr. Amen.
The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial that built on the previous research conducted by Dr. Daniel Amen and his staff at the Amen Clinics. This was an exhaustive trial designed to eliminate all doubt on the effectiveness of Brain Power Basics.
Previously, Dr. Amen and his staff had conducted research on the long-term implications of NFL players with an assortment of conditions, and how these nutrients could potentially support those individuals. The study with active and retired professional football players showed significant improvement in cerebral blood flow, mood, and cognition.
The research team determined that as a group players experienced an increase in cerebral blood flow, which was measured by single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging. The participants also showed improvement in cognitive function and proficiency, reasoning, attention, and memory.
The NFL study was not randomized, nor was it placebo controlled, unlike the new study that is being released this month. Lifestyle interventions such as diet, exercise, sleep, weight loss, and substance issues were also given at the beginning on the trial to the participants in the NFL study. Any one of these interventions could contribute to the improvements experienced by the participants, prompting the need for this new study.
This new study reached out to a sample of the typical population and lowered the dosages, acting under the assumption that the people being tested in the study did not have the mental challenges of the players. Lifestyle interventions were also left out of the trial.
All participants were screened to exclude individuals currently suffering from a psychiatric disorder and/or taking psychiatric medications. Individuals also suffering from substance abuse or neurological disturbances were excluded from the study. Of the 30 individuals recruited for the trial, only 5 dropped out for reasons unrelated to the study. The participants were then evaluated using SPECT imaging and three different neuropsychological testing methods before being given Brain Power Basics or placebo. The groups were then split up with half receiving Brain Power Basics and the other half receiving placebo. Two months later, all the participants were tested using the same methods and then switched. The group that had been on placebo was now on Brain Power Basics and the group that had been on the Brain Power Basics was now on placebo. After another two months had passed, both groups were tested again. This was a crossover trial, which means that since all participants received both treatment methods, they act as their own control group, creating a balanced trial.
Researchers discovered that the groups taking the Brain Power Basics experienced an increase in their cerebral blood flow and improvement on multiple cognitive and emotional levels. Significant improvements in reasoning, memory, information processing accuracy, executive function, mood, emotional identification, and reduced hostility were also recorded.
