It probably doesn’t come as news to many of you that chocolate is one of the most craved foods in the world. Most cultures have their own take on chocolate with slight variations and preferences visible all over the globe. Chocolate is one of those things that tends to unite people because the sweet tooth is a defining part of the human experience.
Chocolate also contains a lot of very interesting chemicals. In fact, chocolate contains a significant amount of Phenylethlamine (or PEA), which is one of the same chemicals that our body releases when we feel feelings of love. Of course, like many things, it’s important to remember that you aren’t absorbing any of that by eating it – you need to eat things that stimulate its production in your brain instead of just consuming it. Other chemicals like Tyramine, Theobromine and Tryptophan are all present in chocolate and they’re known for promoting feeling of calmness or satisfaction.Combine that with a sweet taste (not to mention the prospect of nougat or almonds) and you don’t need much more explanation of why most people just can’t seem to get enough of the stuff.
A recent study out of Sweden, published in the journal Neurology, has showed chocolate to be a notable step in decreasing a risk of stroke. In fact, individuals in the study who ate 2 ounces of chocolate per week were shown to reduce their likelihood of stroke by 17%. This is notable because most studies showing beneficial properties in chocolate tend to see them exhibited primarily in women.
Dark chocolate and it’s cardiovascular benefits have notable benefits for women but results for men were inconclusive. In this stroke study, the positive results were present in equal levels for both women and men. It appears as though chocolate may not help men’s hearts as much as women’s but the mental health benefits are present for everybody.
Obviously you want to focus on dark chocolate and it’s important to remember that chocolate should be treated similarly to wine. It’s good for you in small quantities, great with a meal but never worth overindulging in.Write your post here.
